The furniture that you choose for your home says a lot about you and your home’s personality. The pieces you select represent your unique style and even your values, and the furniture you display is often one of the first things in your house that grabs attention from your guests. So let’s take a look at what is trending this year.
Outdoor Furniture Indoors
Gather up those deck chairs and arrange them in your living room. Well maybe not, but that is the essence of this trend. When emulating this look, try to hold on to a level of sophistication instead of making your room look as if you were too busy to pick out couches and simply grabbed some furniture from your deck. Aged metals, glass, wicker and natural wood are popular options. Try re-using some old patio dining chairs in your newly re-modeled kitchen, or search yard sales for some outdoor sofas that with a little TLC will be a great fit for your family room.
Henry David Thoreau said, “What’s the use of a fine house if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on?” The furniture that you choose can say a lot about your environmental views and your relationship with Planet Earth. And what’s more suited for a “green” home than some fashionable, Eco-friendly furniture?
Wooden furniture is timeless and a trend that will continue. A way to achieve this warm, traditional look while still feeling good about your Eco-footprint is to use reclaimed wood. This is wood that has been salvaged from an existing, antique structure. Not only is the wood beautiful, individual, and charming, but it comes with a history, too. A reclaimed wood table top may be a perfect statement piece in your dining room!
Another Eco-friendly option is poly lumber. This is a wood-like substance that is made from recycled plastics. In addition to saving milk jugs and water bottles from an eternity in a landfill, poly lumber furniture has a lifespan of about 50 years. Poly lumber has the appearance and weight properties of real wood, but it comes in some wonderfully bright and exciting colors. Which leads us to our next trend.
Say bye to beige and hello to color. Gasp! We’re seeing a lot of juicy hues in design recently. People who are not afraid of using mango, lime, purple, or aqua in their projects will love this trend and embrace it wholeheartedly. For those of you who are more conservative, you can try slowly integrating color using accent pieces. Blue is really making a comeback right now, so try integrating a few blue items, such as throw pillows, lampshades, or vases, to ease yourself into the transition if you are not willing to jump in with both feet just yet.
